Weekend Warriors

I am still trying to to catch up from last weekend and it is already this weekend! Summers are so busy and the weather has been (for me) cooperating pretty well which means that adventures (and traditions) abound. In an effort to catch up – last weekend will just be grouped in one post.

So, last Friday, Alec and I went to beach with Ben and Noelle- then out to the farm for our pick up. After that it was swimming lessons. And here we start the weekend. At 6 we met up with the Todd family for some La Kermesse parade fun. If you need a recap about La Kermesse click this link: last year.

After parade we went to dinner with the Todd family. We sat outside on the deck at ROTM and enjoyed the summer evening temps. While we were eating, one of the bagpipers that had been in the parade spontaneously started playing. The kids all got up to watch and folks were clapping to the music. It was a great moment.

The picture to the left is something you won’t see too often. That is Alec with no more energy. We did it. We finally wore him out. ;) Now we know the trick! Keep him busy for 12 hours straight!

Saturday morning we went to the Saco Sidewalk Arts Festival. You may have seen Alec and Leo’s picture in the paper that I posted on FB. Too cute.

We hit up a playground on the east end of Portland after a lunch in town. This particular monkey had a pretty good time playing:

Alec and Leo had a good time too:

After that it was a walk through the Old Port. We had some ice cream and hit up the Life Is Good store where they got free popcorn and bumper stickers. Do 5 year olds really need a bumper sticker? I think not.  Alec saved it and stuck it on my car.  There goes my “no bumper sticker;’ policy. Down the drain!

Saturday night was spent at Erik’s parents house for dinner and then the La Kermesse fireworks.  Alec fell asleep mid show. Right in my arms-hence I have no pictures. Run the kid ragged and he will sleep through anything. Good to know. ;)

Sunday was beach day! I have been to the beach more this month than I did all of last summer!

The water was oddly warm and crazy calm. Don’t we look like we are at a lake? No waves to speak of. Alec’s new favorite thing is lay on the boogie board and have you hold it there so he can float. Great and relaxing for him- boring for those holding the rope.

Nana took a turn holding the leash. See the ocean? So calm. Odd.

These boys, when reunited with each other, are in the best moods the entire time they are together. It’s like something is missing when they are apart and and when together they are complete. They still fight (no doubt) but it is something you can feel when you are around them. Something tangible. We’ll let them soak up every opportunity to be together before the big moves happens and Leo is far away again. Thankfully not as far as last time.  :)

CSA Week 2 (last week)

Alec was a little tired from 5 hours at the beach. He thought doggie might make him feel better. Doggie, for the record, was really glad the pigs were sleeping He was a little scared of them.

I thought I took a picture of all the produce this week but I guess I forgot.

And that’s the farm last week.

I broke my mother

Yeah.

Suckadoo.

I took them out for a walk in the woods. They wanted to see Cascade Falls since, ya know, I lived a mere mile away from it for almost 10 years and never took them there.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Too many roots- she twisted a certain way and tweaked her back. It rendered her broken and out of commission for about a week. Sorry mom. And she needed to heal. They still have more important traveling to do. I felt so bad.

Still looking good here.

And maybe not so good here.018

After I broke my mom, we took her home to rest. To ensure that she actually did rest, that meant that Alec, my dad and I needed to leave the house. We can all get a tad needy at times.

What to do?

We choose to do another walk in the woods.

A new one for all of us.

The Saco Heath.

It was interesting. Sort of like the bog walk in Orono without the funding needed to maintain it.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Sometimes it is hard taking other people on our walks with us. Not for me- I enjoy their company immensely but for Alec who likes to stop and look at things and also likes to be the leader. This  created an issue for him when he would stop to look at something and my dad would pass him. Alec would stop looking and run to catch up. He wouldn’t let my dad pass him even if he was tired and wanted to slow down. It’s an irritating quality when trying to enjoy a nice walk. I hope this ‘leadership’ translates into a little competitiveness with his grades or in athletics when he is older! Or maybe it is just the 5 year old in him. ;0)

We walked out to the Heath and through part of it but couldn’t finish it. I think it use to loop back around and maybe someday it will again.

Not a bad little walk.

Wish I hadn’t broken my mother and she could have come with us too.
