Saturday Fun Day!

We had all sorts of fun on Saturday. We started our day at a puppet show sponsored by the library. I happen to notice it in the paper the night before and got it stuck in my head – I wanted to go. I think I kind of had to put my foot down with Erik and maybe strong armed Carrie into coming with us. Boy, am I glad I did. They were great- it  was put on by The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers out of Bar Harbor.  Here is their  website with calendar of events if you can catch one. We saw "The Legend of the Banana Kid"- the kids loved it…we all loved it. Alec is still talking about it.  “Happy Happy Fun Fun!”

After the puppet show- Carrie and I brought the kids back here for lunch. Carrie and I ate…and the kids did this:

Hey- what’s a little mess? Carrie and I got to eat and talk. Wow!

Erik had deserted us for the OOB BBQFest and Hoedown.  He was happy.

Little ‘ol Faye got tired so Carrie brought her home for a nap and Alec and I got a special treat –we got to keep Mya here with us for the rest of the afternoon.

And we spoiled her…with a little chocolate ice cream….

a movie…and Alec got a little snuggle time with Mya..isn’t it nice she lets him snuggle up to her?

And then a little playtime outside. The Clampits meets Miss Daisy.

And then Mya took the wheel!

Apparently riding, as well as driving, requires your tongue sticking out.

After lots of fun- we brought Mya home – and the kids continued playing- they had a big project.

Whatever it was – they think it was successful!

195

Then it was dreammie time. They were tuckered out!

201

I think they wore poor Sam out, too!

What a great day!

CSA Week 3

This week Hilary and Alec joined me for pick-up on the farm.  (although for some strange reason- I have no pic’s of Hilary?!)

021

029

032

Alec even found some trucks – I think he saw those and felt immediately at home there.

Our bounty….

This week's harvest:
Strawberries
Lettuce
Spinach
Kohlrabi
Bok Choi
Cabbage
Radishes
Hakurei Salad Turnips
Extra basil and tomato seedlings

The spinach, lettuce, radishes, turnips went right into tonight’s dinner salad with leftovers for lunch tomorrow at work.  I also see another Cole Slaw in our future….maybe over the holiday weekend.

La Kermesse

Friday night (after it poured buckets for days) we ventured out with the Todd family for the La Kermesse parade and to check out the festivities.  What is La Kermesse you ask? Well, let me tell you, my friends, I still have no freakin’ idea! No, really- when I moved down here I heard a lot about it but had never been until this year.

Here is what I have gleaned over the past 16 years…Biddeford has a very large French population. They like to party so they have a celebration to celebrate their French heritage.  In the past they have liked to party so much that the celebration has ruined the football field. People from Biddeford also like football.

A lot.

A fractured community.

To recap:  The large French community drank and partied too much and they ruined the football field so last year the party got booted.

BUT

They regrouped, persevered and the party started somewhere else in Biddeford.

Football grass can grow and the party continues…

celebrating….

The Frog.

I don’t know. Really. I don’t know.

But what the hay…it’s a party.   And so we joined the festivities and went to watch the parade in the rain…. we were prepared.

Carrie and I too, no less!

The Frog(s).

After the parade -we crossed from Saco into Biddeford for the celebration.

134

136

We embraced a little fried dough, some Poutine (?) (fries with gravy and special cheese), an Elvis sighting and the smell of stale beer with a little karaoke background music.  We had experienced Le Kermesse.

139

So we left and walked back over the bridge and went to Run of the Mill to continue our own celebration.

145

148

(well- some of us did…others are just too young looking for their own good and got carded…without an ID…how was that water?)   :)

Silliness was enjoyed….

169

151

A little tick checking…no joke…Alec had My check his hair for ticks. The kid is obsessed.

153

And tons of love…

An outing just to celebrate The Frog.

Awesome!

CSA Week 2 Part II

Garlic Scapes…..oh my!

They are the greens below that look like a cross between a green bean and a scallion.  I chopped the cabbage that came this week (Napa I think) to make some cole slaw- I decided to throw in the garlic scapes- they didn’t smell much like garlic so I thought it might just add a touch of flavor. They were surprisingly strong. Very strong. Very, very very strong.  I sweetened the slaw with some apple and a sprinkle of sugar but I don’t think it cut the garlic enough. Alec took a bite and spit it directly out and started yelling that his mouth was on fire.  Whoops.

092

093

Apparently when it comes to garlic scapes- a little can go a long way. Hours later and  the flavor lingers.

No vampires will be visiting us in the near future.

Or is that a myth?

Indoor Sports

Friday Alec’s class was going to take a field trip to a local park and hold their own Olympics. Sounds like a fabulous time huh? Unfortunately it poured buckets.

He was prepared. Just in case. But they didn’t go.

001

They modified his classroom and held some of the competitions inside.  Prizes were had.

006

Could anyone be happier to win John Deere gummies? I don’t think so!

And how about these medals? So very cute and clever!

007

Erik and I are exploring leaving his current daycare (school) –we’ve been visiting quite a few. Some we can rule out as soon as we walk in. Some feel better than others.  Some wow you and you think – this might be neat.  Seems like it wouldn’t be that hard. But…it is. If I were new and exploring his current school- I might nix it instantly…but ….it’s like a little bit of a hidden gem.  It might sometimes be considered a  little rough around the edges (ok sometimes a lot) but underneath all the rough are his teachers who have hearts of gold.  Those who know my child would flip for a package of John Deere gummies. And that is just cool.

CSA Week 2

Erik survived week 1. He/we managed to to eat 90% of what was given to us. Tons of salads.

Here is week 2.

016

This week's harvest:
Garlic Scapes
Strawberries
Mizuna
Lettuce
Basil Seedling
Cilantro
Beets with greens
Napa Cabbage
Rhubarb
Radishes

I copied that from the website-  I had to identify Minza by process of elimination.

The strawberries were gone in a nano-second.

We took the mizuna and put it in a blueberry smoothie.

025

028

It wasn’t that good. It’s a texture thing and, by the way, it looked much better in person. How do I solve the texture thing?

I chopped up the beet greens and lettuce for a salads for lunch for the week.Oh. And a radish.

029

And before the the cilantro could go bad-(day 2 and it was wilting) I made some cilantro salad dressing. I put too much garlic in it so it will be an at home –dinner dressing…not a work lunch salad..wow garlic breath!

033

We still have last week’s rhubard and this weeks that I need to do something about. And the cabbage and the beet. And the garlic scapes.

And that’s it from here.
