The small things

As grown adults – do you know that my sisters and I still bicker over one topic constantly?

Yep-we do.

What could my sisters and I have to bicker about as 40+ year olds, you ask?

My parents.

We don’t fight over who has to have them…we fight over who gets to have them.

You see- my sisters and I are lucky.

So very lucky.

While our parents don’t live anywhere near each of us – they still make us feel, whether they are near or far, that we are loved.

Not over-the-top in an intrusive way, smooshy way.

No, it’s the smaller things.

They pay attention.  They are listeners. They allow us to be us.

This occurred to me as I (sadly) dropped them off at the airport this morning that this is what makes us feel so loved. As my mom is hugging me- she is saying –let me know when Alec’s doctor appointment is rescheduled, how it goes with the babysitter and then she rattled off a few more things. It doesn’t matter what they were – it matters that they hear the little things. When they are at their home they are always asking us questions either via e-mail or on the phone that let us know that even though they are far away enjoying their sunny skies in Florida, we are never far from their hearts or out of their thoughts.

That’s the important part about love, isn’t it?

The small things.

They make sure they do the little things.

They give us the greatest gift they can: the gift of being ‘present’ either in person, on the phone, skype or email.
