Hopping around Sebago

Warning: The use of Todd as both a first name and a last name could potentially get confusing in this post.

After spending quite a bit of time at the lake with Todd and family during the 4th, we decided to give them break from us. This worked exceedingly well because we had been invited to spend the night with the Todd family on another part of the same lake.

On an island.

Yep.

Their extended family has an island.

Of course they are use to this so they may have been a little blasé about it but I thought it was pretty cool.

“Health will be right over to pick you up in the boat.”

Hmmm…yep. That’s cool.

But wait- let’s back track a little.

I didn’t grow up on a lake. I didn’t grow up with family that had places on the lake. If I wanted water- I had to go the public pool (which I did 2x a day in the summer until I joined the swim team) or I had to beg to go the ocean which on most days was too long of a drive. Julie’s family had a place on a lake but her mother hated going out there so we had to do some major begging to get ourselves there. My experiences with boats? Breaking down on our neighbors boat one 4th of July when we still lived in Buffalo. I spent the majority of my childhood canoeing which mostly involved paddling my dad around while he fished.   (Before I sound ungrateful, my family traveled, but mostly straight out of New England.) I didn’t have the typical summer lake experiences that others have had.

Erik, on the other hand, had the experiences of going with Todd’s family and Tiny and Wayne to Sebago and renting camps. Wayne had a boat. Erik is used to going at break neck speeds. Although every year now that we have rented with the Petits- Angie, myself and the children must listen to Todd and Erik reminisce about their childhood of attaching something motorized to the canoe and that was the only boating they could do alone. Or some variation on that theme. Yada Yada Yada.

So, you tell me you grew up spending your summers on your families’ island and you are bringing your boat over to pick me up?

It’s going to have an effect on me.

Upon our arrival, they showed us around. Carrie and I conversed over a lovely glass of wine

while the kiddos went swimming. If water is near, then Alec wants to be in it.

Carrie, being the consummate hostess that she is, prepared us a wonderful dinner which we ate on the deck down by the water.

Nice.

The children sat at their own table.

Even better.

A beautiful evening.

Nearly perfect.

What wasn’t prefect?

The large head cold that had engulfed my brain. Oh my. Not much is more embarrassing than being a guest at someone’s place and having to warn them that you may keep them awake from your snoring. They poo-poo’ed it and then you must explain that you know it is loud because for the past 2 nights you have woken yourself up snoring. Do they mind if you sleep as far away from everyone as possible?

No dainty sleeping for me. I was a freight train coming through the house.

Now please, I wasn’t gooping snot everywhere and sharing germs. It’s like my throat glands and sinuses decided to have a long weekend party with their extended family. Nothing was leaving – I was swollen but not snotty. At this point my eyes had not yet started their downward spiral. Bonus.

The next morning, after a breakfast of muffins, eggs, sausages, bacon and vegan pancakes (irony anyone?) we headed out for a day of cruising on the boat.

As I mentioned before- I didn’t grow up going for boat rides. Invariably (for the few times a year I am on a boat) I always get nervous, not at the speed, but at the bouncing if the water is choppy or going through another boat’s wake. Never mind I had been on a boat the day before, it still took me a few minutes to unclench my hands and sit back and enjoy. And finding the right spot to sit in the boat so the pounding in my head from my cold didn’t make me feel like I wanted to puke? Mission accomplished.

The rest of the clan? Non-issue for those guys. :)

Our destination?

Up the Songo River and through the Songo Locks to Brandy Pond and then to Long Lake for some ice cream.

Yeah, we’ll just take the boat to the causeway and go grab some ice cream.

No big deal. :)

And after the ice cream, a trip to the sand bar for a little cool down before the end of our day.

How nice it was for the Todd family to include us in their outing. We had such a great day with them. These are the days that Alec will be telling his kids about someday. :)
