Weekly Reader & A happy moment…

With school, soccer, swimming and friends it felt harder to get to the library the past couple weeks. Friday after school was rainy and dreary and so it seemed the perfect afternoon to head to the library. We walked in and we were greeted by familiar faces. It was our library friends!  Nothing warms you up and makes you happier than to feel part of a community when you sometimes feel you are an outsider since you did not grow up in this small town. Sort –of like when Norm walks into Cheers (dating myself here!). I love our librarians who know Alec and I and can make recommendations on books for us (or put one aside without having to ask)- I never have to bring a library card (it’s the small things). I love our library friends that we seem to always run into there. They love books too. I love people who love books. We were all (young & old alike) chatting and it was loud! And I commented to one of the librarians “My- we are boisterous today”. And she just smiled and said “Better to have a loud library full of friends and happiness then a quiet and empty library”.  Amen sista’! What a happy moment.

My picks for him:

Chapter books: 022

Alec’s picks:

Nonfiction for obvious reasons:

We are over 200 for our 300 by Christmas goal. When Alec was younger and wasn’t in school I felt like I read him 300 books a week. I wonder how much I really did read? I know it felt like all the time. But was it really?  I love this goal. It reinforces how important it is to read all kinds of books (short and long); to take stock of what his likes and dislikes are AND most importantly- are you really reading as much as you think you are?

Lemon & Blueberry

014

Alec was so happy that Miss Fran (his PreK teacher from years ago) decided that Lemon and Blueberry needed to come live with a family and she chose us (with our permission of course!) Of all her students from the past couple years- Alec was one of the few students who really took to caring for the birds. And as we would come to visit the classroom last year- the birds absolutely would recognize Alec when he came over to talk to them. They would hop to the front of the cage and chirp happily when they heard his voice.

So cute.

007

Can I just say that I love them?

They are the messiest creatures (we have already moved the dust buster by their cage) however they more than make up for it with their chirping. It makes me so happy! You walk into the room and they greet you and sing and chirp. It’s so sweet.

I have spent more money than I care to admit to order them a new cage, more food, new toys and more. All should be here early next week.  I have spent a ton of time researching how to care for parakeets.  They are such social creatures and so funny. They have their own personalities and wow are they smart!

Shania has yet to notice them. That’ll be interesting when she does but since she is old, deaf and lazy….I don’t think she will.  She was laying about 3 feet from their cage the other day and never even looked their way.

Welcome to our house little birdies! We hope we can make you as happy as you are making us!

What Alec said

We were driving home from school the other day and Alec is chattering away in the backseat…just chattering about nothing (legos, star wars, snacks etc)-…kind of a no-filter stream of conscious verbal diarrhea (he gets this from his mother father).  I admit I sometimes tune him out.

As we were driving by the cemetery-I hear him say “Hey look…they have a customer!”

I looked and there was a no funeral….just a car in the parking lot.

It was funny. It made me laugh. Laughing is good.

A Little Hike

Last weekend at Alec’s suggestion we went to Pownal to hike Bradbury Mountain and to have a picnic on top. We took the shortest route up. This little boy is crazy happy when he is in the woods.

Alec knew the perfect way for our family to spend the day. It was wonderful.

The Last of the Season

On Sunday morning of Labor day weekend we did house work. Exciting stuff. Right? Lawn stuff, floors, laundry- prepping the bathroom for painting. Not much fun. Not cool on a holiday weekend. We decided that was just wrong. The weather forecast for Monday was bleak so we decided to cease all household activity and head to Aquaboggin for one last visit.

Weekly Reader

Library picks this week….

001 002 003 004 005 006 007

Slugger (a slug who wants to play baseball) and What Really Happened to Humpty are both really cute books. The librarian suggested The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. She said it was a great, great story and a tear jerker. hmmmm…not sure we are ready for heavy reading right now.  I am thinking The Worm Whisperer is more up Alec’s alley but I grabbed it just in case.
