We rose early this August 1st for a different kind of adventure. Alec was scheduled to have tubes in his ears and his adenoids removed. What fun –right? He was in denial about the whole thing and to be honest we discussed it very little leading up to it. Limited information kept the anxiety level low. He handled it like a champ!

Watching cartoons while getting ready!

Alec was very engaging while speaking with all the doctors and nurses that coming into and out of his room. You would have thought this would be an everyday occurrence for him. He even corrected one nurse who kept calling him Alex. :) I was the chosen parent to accompany Alec into the OR…we all know Erik doesn’t do so well with these settings..think back to my epidural story or Alec’s stiches. When they wheeled Alec into the OR –he said it looked like a rocket ship – so as he was using the breathing mask to fall asleep –they were making up a story about rocket ships to help him. Very cute. Very disconcerting to a mom –when your child just slumps over, even if you are expecting it. It was very hard to walk out of that room and leave him there.
But in less than 50 minutes the doctor was back out and telling us the results. Apparently he will be able to hear REALLY well now. The doctor indicated that with the removal of the ‘cement’ that was in his middle ear area he should hear better than ever and his vocabulary and speech should improve. Yikes..can you imagine? He was already a pretty articulate kid! I am anxious to see if this will alleviate those mysterious fever/headache combos he has.
Next was recovery- he woke up pretty rough- sobbing and thrashing-so they sedated him to let him sleep it off a little longer. Thank goodness- it brought tears to my eyes watching him so agitated .But watching him snuggle in and sleep on his daddy brought tears to my eyes too. Just a little emotional I guess!

Waking up a little more and still a little stoned from the additional sedation. It took quite a bit of concentration on his part to actually get that popsicle into his mouth.

Instead of wheelchairs… pretty clever!

Resting a little more.

And then we were outta there a mere 3 hours later. Yeah!

Now we are home – resting on the couch and streaming some Netflix -Mighty Machines-pure happiness and munching on Cheese Its of all things! They say that recovery for these procedures is pretty quick so look for some more of Alec’s adventures soon.
