Alec-isms

Silly:

“Hey tickle me right here” (pointing to his armpit) ..”it’s the tickle jackpot!”

Science:

During super-storm Sandy as we were watching the weather and they were talking about the storm cells. “Mom, I need to go check the DNA of the storm’s cells.  Because you know everyone’s DNA is different. I need to unravel the strands.”

Geography:

Is Lost Angela part of the United States?

Music:

Alec singing (to the song- Call Me, Maybe)…  ‘she’s my mother…so call me, maybe’

Me- “Ummm…Alec it’s  ‘here’s my number – so call, maybe’”

Alec- oh….(pauses)- that makes so much more sense.

Pop Culture:

He mumbles something about Justin Beaver.

I say – “you mean Justin Beiber?”

Alec “ Yeah….Who is the Justin Beaver guy anyway?”

Me: “Where did hear about Justin Beiber?”

Alec:  “Brady Bacora was talking about him on the playground. His sister in love with him.  I just hear things and then I know them, mom”.

Well there ya go.

Practical:

In the car driving the other day “Mom- so if someone says ‘it’s a long story’ that really just means they don’t feel like telling you the story –right”?

Me- “You are right- that’s a pretty smart observation. You are a smart kid”

Alec- “That’s me – Mr. 2 smart brains”.

I think I have mentioned before that Alec spends a lot of time ‘in’ his brain trying to put things in boxes when he can’t understand something. He has a small obsession with the Titanic right now and spends a lot of time trying to figure out how big it really was. Was it bigger – than our house? Yes. Is is bigger than my school? Yes. Things like this….. over and over and over and over.

His biggest and must current beef is with the fact the there is really only (in his mind) one body of water that is ocean (if you look at it on the map) and since it is all connected why does it have different names. The expanse of it is perplexing to him. He just wants us to say ”Yes Alec – there is only one Ocean!”. We talk about this often.

051 It’s hard to be him with all these thoughts!

Snow glorious Snow

002

As I was taking pictures of Alec frolicking in the snow I had thoughts of typing a wondrous post on the merits of an early snowfall. How wonderful it was that he could spend an hours occupying himself outside getting fresh air and wearing himself out. And the beauty of it- ahhh yes- the beauty.

But you know what?

It just ain’t mean to be.

The reality is that my entry way looks like a bomb went off because, of course, I was not prepared to see the white stuff. The weather man told me rain. And I believed him.

What was I thinking?

So, in a mad rush this morning, I pulled out the tubs, riffled through the snow gear throwing snow pants and boots around like little missiles. Oh wait – we need mittens and hats too. Errhhh.

And now we need to leave earlier because I have to drive boy child to school because there is no way I am schlepping myself in dress clothes to the bus stop to have the crazy drivers in my neighborhood spray slush on me.

And because that snow finally did turn to rain- I have wet boots, jackets, hats and mittens all over the floor in entry way drying out because they are SOAKED.

So, it might be pretty and all but it better melt soon.

I am not ready for this yet.

Maybe December 24th…for a few hours might nice but until then…

rain please.

Rock the Vote

Alec and I rocked our vote after school on today. It took us 10 to 15 minutes to to get through the line of cars and park. It took us less than 10 minutes to vote and get back in our car.

Super quick. IMG_0554

Michelle Obama said this: “When you walk through the door of opportunity, hold it open for someone else. That’s what America is all about.”

I believe this.

Halloween

We didn’t drag out the Halloween festivities out as much this year as last year. Nope. We condensed it into a weekend and wow – what a weekend it was!

We started off last Friday with my work party. They/we out-do themselves every year.

As usual, the pictures do not do it justice. Alec had a blast and I finally had to drag him out of there after a few hours.  It is such a great moral booster for the people who work there- and it is always nice for the families to come in and see where their loved ones work. There were 54 kids in attendance this year. Wow!

Saturday morning we woke up bright and early for the Haunted Breakfast.  We decided to hit the 8am seating because we thought we had soccer at 9 but that changed long after we had made the reservations. We felt pretty lucky for Alec that he to got to sit with his peeps. We had originally planned to go with Ben, Noelle and Aaron and then we found out McKenna and Connelly would be there and then Pam and Kiley decided come along. The more the merrier.

126Noelle loves the festive stuff. And bacon. She was a pretty happy momma even if she had to wake up early.

162 Next up was Soccerween. We did a costume change for this one because we thought running around in a Scooby outfit might just make the poor boy overheat.

034046 057 Did you think we might be done for the day?

HA!

Think again.

Saco use to have their Harvestfest but this year turned it into the MonsterMash or maybe Monster Bash. I am not really sure which and I am not really sure why it changed names. It was pretty much the same thing. Alec at this point was pretty much toast and his behavior plummeted. Think stock market crash plummet. So annoying but we persevered in the name of all things Halloween. ;) Thankfully it was a beautiful day and we were with the peeps who know our child in good times and in bad and they still stick by us. (Thanks guys!)

083085 096 They decorated their own cookies and sat to have a bite. There was music playing and the beat just struck them (mostly Ben) into some dancing moves!

And then the hayride.

We made a few more stops but the boys spent the majority of their time jumping from bale of hay to bale of hay. Over and over and over.

122(I don’t think Harry Potter understands what these little super heroes are doing! )

And with that- the Saturday festivities were done.

Sunday was the at-home preparations.

A little pumpkin carving.

008

I missed all the fun in-between photos because I had to go give Nanny her meds and make her lunch.

And then more fun!

What are they making?  Why these yummy chocolate filled rice krispie pumpkins.

Calories? What calories?

Fast forward a few days and one tropical storm later and we are arrive on Halloween evening. Alec had a school “Harvest” party during the day. No costumes needed (or allowed). Once home we had to prepare for the official event.

009026   008

We ate dinner with Noelle and Aaron & Ben (and Buffy) and prepared to go out. Well, we attempted to eat but the boys were so wild that it was a fail. Next year we are skipping dinner since they won’t eat anyway!

032 I stayed home to hand out candy. Next year, Noelle has informed me that I need to find a ‘candy sitter’ to hand out the goods. I think she is right!

005

After the trick-or treating we all went to visit Auntie Hil and Uncle Tom for a little more candy action. Both boys were weary and shucked their costumes. Uncle Tommy has a way of winding these boys up so things got a little wild again.

A proper uncle I would say :)

The next stop for us was a Erik’s parent house.

But – at this time- Alec was beat and so were we. No pictures were taken at our last stop.

Erik’s mom was crushed that Alec wasn’t wearing his costume and I don’t blame her.

Alec was hot, tired and crashing from all the sugar and didn’t want to put it on – I couldn’t blame him either.

But she had gone trick or treating with Leo while they were on Akron over the weekend so I didn’t feel too bad.

The Scooby-Doo costume was laid to rest.

And that my friends is what they call ‘The End’.

Good bye orange, black, pumpkins, witches, costumes and the like until next year!
