Alec wanted to go camping for his birthday-no big party – just a few friends in a tent. Erik and I hashed it a bit and decided it might be fun. So texted Courtney and she said Leo was ‘in’. I called Noelle and she thought I was crazy. “You WANT to take these boys camping? Really?”
Yep. Really.
I think.
It’s not like we were going far- only to Freeport. What could happen? I mean really……
Then Leo wasn’t so sure he was ‘in’. And then Alec started throwing up.
I started to rethink the whole thing up until we drove out of the driveway at 2 on Saturday.
But things turned around completely.
I could not have asked for better weather/temps. The children got along fabulously. Amazingly. Like crazy awesome. The campsite was nearly perfect. Our visitors warmed my heart. It was better than I could have ever hoped.
The ride up:
I had done a bit of research in planning this little outing. I wanted something with plenty for the children to do but without it being crazy busy and sites crammed together. Recompense Campground in Freeport was nearly PERFECT. Upon finding our campsite –we discovered the water view was a bit obstructed but provided such a nice breeze on this 95% & 100% humidity day. Bonus the- little play structure was within view of our site – so while Erik and I were attempting to put up the tent- they boys were able to go over and play. We could keep an eye on them but provided them a bit of “freedom”.
Because the grassy field was beside us – we didn’t feel too closed in – and with ocean all around us – it was really just amazing.
After the tent was up – we went down to the water to cool off.
So many cute picture – I am having trouble choosing which to put up.
We were super lucky that Carrie and the girls drove up to the campsite to spend the evening hanging around with us. I feel so lucky for Alec that he was surrounded with friends that he has known all his life (all 6 years :) )

We let the kids play on the playground until it was dark. The kids loved the freedom – they made friends with other kids and they all played together. It was just a really cool time to watch them just being kids. They thought they were all that and a slice of cheese staying up way past dark. After Carrie and the girls left- we got the boys to bed. Leo promptly fell asleep. It took Alec and Ben an hour longer. This was mildly irritating but expected and really the only wrinkle in the whole trip. But since it was expected- we just rolled with it.
And went to bed with them. :)
