Last year we took Alec skating a few times at the outdoor rink and it was great –but last year was a ‘real’ Maine winter. This year –not so much. It gets cold enough to freeze the ice and then rains the next day. That is not conducive to making ice. Alec was asking to go skating so I signed him up for some lessons. Indoor rinks are a guarantee for good ice.
Week 1 –not such a good experience. They told me to dress him up in warm clothes and put snow pants on him to soften the falls. Too much bulk and the poor kid couldn’t move. Think A Christmas Story…”I can’t move my arms”. They would practice falling and getting up but he he just couldn’t do it. His snow pants were too bulky. I don’t think his skates fit too well either because his ankles would just shake and give out.
He left so frustrated and sad. My heart was breaking for him.

Week 2- much better. It took a lot of coaxing to get him to the arena but I am so glad we did. I think he mustered every ounce of courage he had. I really didn’t blame him for not wanting to go – I wouldn’t have either if I were him but I also didn’t want him to give up on himself. Hard parenting moment. But…this time he had skates that fit and a little bit less clothing. And (yeah!) this time he could get up and stay up like a champ! I was so proud of him for going back when it went so horribly the first time.
Way to go lil’ buddy!
