South Dakota
Alec’s office is in South Dakota.
Why?
I have no idea. We’ve never been there. He is consistent with this answer. It is not in Florida, Virginia, New York or any other state he does know. Nope –it’s South Dakota?! He often has to go to work there. His stories are quite elaborate about South Dakota and his business there.
Here is what I know about it.
It’s cold in South Dakota. Very cold. There is an office building at his work but mostly it is buildings that house the construction and emergency vehicles. They dig foundations fairly often and a lot of times there is an emergency which requires the emergency vehicles. I do know that Alec’s paging system is not international because he often pages Leo about the emergency but Leo never calls back. (Nicaragua is pretty far after all). It is usually Ben and Alec that have to solve all the problems in South Dakota. Apparently my son is also a chauvinist because as much as he loves Mya, she is never involved in any construction or emergency response needs. She is usually “busy”. There are lots of traffic jams in South Dakota… too many vehicles and not enough roads maybe? Sometimes he has to be on-call at work. He has to go into his office when he gets paged and so he travels to South Dakota to get to his office. Sometimes Doggie has to go into the office with him when he gets paged but blanket doesn’t like it there.
I found out today that Erik had been to visit South Dakota. (This was, in fact, very surprising to Erik!) Alec tells me he will take me there one of these days. He’s pretty busy.
I walked into daycare to pick up Alec the other day and his teacher, Miss Erica, asked if we had been to South Dakota. I just laughed and said “No. I see Alec has told you all about his work huh?” She was dumbfounded-he had described it in such detail to her that she thought it was someplace he had been.
Some kids have imaginary friends. Our son has an imaginary job.

Christmas in January
When Alec was a baby Hilary asked what Alec would like for his birthday/Christmas. We talked for a while and decided that instead of offering our spoiled child another toy that she and Tom would provide Alec with a new ‘experience’. They have taken walks on the beach and out to dinner, gone to see Elmo Live and taken a trip to Gray Animal Farm. Fun times bonding with Auntie Hil and Uncle Tom.
The latest Christmas adventure was a trip out to lunch and then Alec’s first trip to Build A Bear. Alec picked out this stunning peace sign bear all on his own. (ha!) Apparently there was a little intervention (thanks Uncle Tom) when picking out the clothes. He ended up with a very cool outfit! You can also put music in the bear. Alec picked out a very catchy and slightly annoying version of “happy birthday”.

Groundhog’s Day..Again
But this time it really is Groundhog’s Day! We are having yet another snow storm and lucky for me and blog titles; it happens to actually fall on Groundhog’s Day. Clearly there will be no shadow to see (not a bad thing!). Poor Punxsutawney Phil is not going to come out in the weather. But we did. Of course.
But first we had to bake something. :)
While we were waiting for them to rise we did a little painting.
we ate on the couch watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
After the movie and snuggle time we called our snow storm buds for some outdoor time.
This is a picture of Alec begging me not to snow blow. I set off all the smoke detectors in the house the night before with the snow blower and Alec was afraid I might do it again. In my defense, Erik is traveling and I have never had to snow blow before. Alec suggested I might just want to wait until dad got home. Oh he of little faith. I persevered. And won! (well except for the snow caked to my hair)
And thankfully Noelle took the boys out back and played with them so I could get it done. They are so cute!
2 hours later…back in for some warm-up
Not such a bad Groundhog’s Day!

All boy..all the time.
We were sledding with Mya the other day and My and Alec decided to go down together.
The tube flipped. My’s reaction from the whitewash: “no more for right now”. Alec’s reaction from it: “Wahoo. Let’s do it again.”
We settled for a walk on the pond:
Alec, of course, had a shovel with him.
Good thing she loves him…all boy and all.

Swim Meet (last weekend)
Clearly Alec was happy with the ride to the meet. Ummmm. Yeah. No. We made it all the way to Portland before he asked if we were there yet and then 5 more times between Portland and Freeport. And we still had a few more hours to go. It was a great ride.
The weather was lovely for the ride too. Blah.
But we made it.
