Happiness is seeing the tiny waist band of a pair of underwear peak out of the shorts of your preschooler and know that the diaper days are done!

It’s a verb. Alec likes to chalk.
I traced Alec’s body outline. He looks like a little boy.
Then I laid down and Alec traced my outline. I look like a jellyfish!
Now don’t be fooled, he didn’t pose nicely for this picture on his own. I had to bribe him. But it worked.
All summer Smiling Hill Farm has been on my list of places I would like to go with Alec. They opened a small barnyard this year for the kids to see animals and of course there is always the homemade ice cream too. We finally got the chance this labor day weekend. Smiling Hill Farm is a working dairy farm so I found it a little strange that of all the barnyard animals there were no cows to see. Guess they were all busy making milk.
Besides having animals, they also had really neat things for the kids to play on. This dinosaur was made from John Deere tractor parts. The lever that Alec is holding makes his mouth open and shut.
I had originally thought someone said it was a petting zoo but it is not. You can put feed in the tubes which lead to their feed bowls. There are signs everywhere saying that you can not touch the animals. I was a little disappointed. Alec didn’t seem to care one way or the other.
It’s Mary Anne! You could pretend to be Mike Mulligan and play on the real old steam shovel. A little boy’s delight!
A monster truck to climb on.
Alpaca’s funny hair-do.
A wood train to play on! All-aboard!
They give you tokens to feed the animals.
A wood plane too!
After our fun time in the Barnyard we walked over the farm store and shared a chocolate extreme ice cream!
It’s been in the high 90’s for the past week. Dinner has consisted of either take-out or whatever we can find in the fridge and then hightailing it the beach as fast as we can for some heat relief and we didn’t come back until way after bedtime. Happiness for Alec.
Just in from Italy, Heather, Jack and baby-to-be joined us one of the evenings. We got a little Clambake (nostalgia for Erik and Jack) and headed to Pine Point. It was a nice change in venue and great to visit with them since we won’t see them again until they move back to the US. Unless, of course, we decide to take a trip to Italy. Now that’s not a bad idea!
And another night. Do you remember the days when you would lay in the sand without a care about how much sand would stick to you? Me either…it’s been that long. But Alec certainly had no issue with it.
Digging a foundation.
Running to the water. Going in?
No way! Alec loves being at the beach but HATES the waves. We are hoping he outgrows this soon.
So I had a blog all ready to post but this happened today and it was such a striking example of what everyday sounds like in our house.
Alec and I were on our way home from Smiling Hill Farm and he spots a yard sale sign and this is where is starts:
Alec “Is there a yard sale?”
Me “Yes..how did you know”
Alec “There was a yard sale sign”
And this where it should have ended but it didn’t…..
ME “How did you know that was a yard sale sign?”
Alec “Where was a yard sale sign?”
Me “Back there – you said you saw a yard sale sign”
Alec “Why was there a yard sale sign?”
At this point I know any reasonable hope of conversation is out the window and we have entered the world of the “3 year old why’s”
Alec repeats “Why was there a yard sale sign?”
Me “I don’t know”
Alec repeats louder “Why was there a yard sale sign”
Me louder “I don’t know”
Alec “Why? why? why? Tell me why”
Me “Hey look Alec a dump truck”
Alec “Why is there a dump truck”
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Erik hasn’t been to Aquaboggin in years. Isn’t that sad? No you say? Ummmm I didn’t think so either. To rectify that situation (and to stop the whining) we went last Saturday. Since it is usually Alec and I that go and we have our routines- it was nice to go as a family and break out of the norm. Plus it was really good for me since I didn’t have to get wet (as much) because, quite frankly, that water was a wee bit chilly!
The picture above is… “YEAH!….AQUABOGGIN!”
Even though we (Alec and I) seem to frequent Aquaboggin often there is a secret I keep. BUT..I am ready to share it….here it is….I am not a fan of waterslides….there…I said it. There is just something I don’t enjoy about having my bathing and water reach places they were never meant to go. Getting old, aren’t I? When Alec and I go we hang around the kiddie area, the pool and the wave pool. On this particular adventure he thought it was neat to watch Dad go down all the slides. And the smart cookie didn’t even bother to ask why mommy wasn’t going down the slides. Good boy.
Take a good long look at the picture below. Did you look? Yes, the little girls are cute and no I have no idea who they are and no they are not the reason I took the picture. Look at the slide. Do you see him? Top right corner.
Here he comes!
Where did he go?
(I thought the chick in the bathing suit added some authenticity and water park flavor to the picture.)
Back again!
Fighting the crowds. It was rough!
Family shot!
Snack time. Did I mention that Nana came with us too? She had a great time dipping in the pools and watching her son and grandson frolic in the water. Frolic..isn’t that a great word? Sounds like something you do in a water park….you frolic.
I told ya the water was chilly.
I did manage to capture one of those elusive smiles. Yeah! That makes it whole day worth it!
And there you have it…our 1st family trip to Aquaboggin.
